Genetic analysis of nutritional quality traits in milled kernels of hybrid rice based on the additive-dominance model

Abstract

A complete diallel cross with seven rice genotypes was conducted to study the seed, endosperm, maternal and cytoplasmic effects on some nutritional quality traits in milled rice kernels. The traits included contents of protein, phosphorous (P), potassium (K), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) and manganese (Mn). The results showed that the protein and mineral contents were controlled by seed, endosperm, cytoplasmic and maternal effects. The proportions of seed dominance variances were larger for protein, P, K and Fe contents. They were mainly controlled by dominance effects and could be increased through heterosis. The seed additive effect was significant for Fe and Mn contents. Therefore, single plant and grain selection based on the seed mineral contents were chosen to improve the hybrid progeny. In addition, Fe, Zn and Mn contents were also affected by cytoplasmic main effects. Two of the 42 crosses (Shahpasand × Hasani and Hasani × Saleh) had significant dominance effects on protein and the four mineral (P, K Fe and Zn) contents. According to the genetic predicted value, the genotypes Hasani and Deilamani were the better parents for increasing the mineral contents in the progenies.
